A Brief History of the Kanata Writers' Group

Our Meeting Place

The Kanata Writers' Group, or KWG, has been meeting at Hazledean Public Library (see above), every second Wednesday at 7pm, since 1997; meeting start time changed Apr 2007 to 6:45pm. The group is a community activity, open to all local residents. ‘Local', in this context, means as far as people are prepared to travel. There is no membership fee, since, to date, the group has been able to enjoy the facilities of the library free of charge.  Membership ranges beyond the boundaries of the old ‘City of Kanata', from Richmond out to Carleton Place and back. And some members as far as British Columbia.

Purpose

The purpose of the group is to encourage the art of literary composition, which is the lifeblood of library activities.

Membership

Membership of the group is informal, and the interests and motivations of the participants vary extensively. The group includes published authors and competition winners, as well as a number of people who write merely for the joy of expressing their ideas in written form. The genres of interest, among the members, are equally varied; including novels, verse, short stories and fiction for children and young adults.

Group Meetings

The principal activity, at group meetings, is the reading of work in progress. Members offer support, encouragement and, when requested, constructive criticism of work under review. The very small number of administrative tasks, necessary for the group to function, are shared on a voluntary basis. To keep the meetings varied in content and tone, the duty of chairperson also circulates among members. From time to time, meetings are enhanced by one member or another, usually when acting as chairperson, organizing some kind of ‘word game' or other activity to promote inspiration. These activities, too, are entirely optional. We ask that members arrive prior to the 6:45pm start time.
